Winter is fast approaching, and as the snow comes, so do thoughts of skiing. To help you get in the swing, check out the fall issue of XCitation, now available online at the CANSI newsletter page.
This issue profiles CANSI founder and honourary member Sigge Bjorklund, and also contains tales from traveling CANSI members, recipes, pro tips, and other tidbits.
Any feedback, story ideas, photos and other comments are welcome – please send them to me.

The 2007 Annual General Meeting for the Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors (CANSI) will be held on Saturday January 12, 2008 at Highlands Nordic, Duntroon (Collingwood area) Ontario (www.highlandsnordic.on.ca). All members are invited to attend. For further information please contact president@cansi.ca.
Nordic skiing has come a long way over the last 35 years and much of that progress is due to the selfless work of the coaches and mentors who have devoted their lives to the sport. Two such men are Heinz Neiderhauser (Founding Father and Honourary Member of CANSI) and Marty Hall. The contribution made by these two consummate coaches was recently celebrated at a retirement party attended by numerous coaches and athletes who wanted to recognize the impact these icons had on the development of the sport from the National Capital Division to Provincial and National levels. Both of these men influenced the shape of Nordic skiing in Canada, having coached the Canadian National Team and mentoring many of the current coaches of the sport. Retirement for Heinz and Marty means a return to their beginnings as athletes and competitors. Watch for their names in future World Masters Competitions!

As a result of a proposal prepared by Mountain and Ontario regions, this September the CANSI Technical committee approved the implementation of a modular approach to the XC Level I instructor certification by introducing a XC Classic-only certification.
This XC Classic-only certification is designed to make CANSI Professional membership available to a larger audience. It is applicable to for school teachers, scout leaders, touring instructors, or instructors at classic-only resorts, who do not have any need to teach skating techniques and/or may themselves lack skating equipment and skiing skills.
Certified XC Classic-only instructors will have the same teaching training and expertise as other XC Level I instructors, and will have the full CANSI insurance coverage while teaching XC Classic skiing.
